Small passenger cars are enjoying a continued resurgence in popularity because of high fuel prices. The 2012 Toyota Yaris is marketed for the young college student or consumers who are looking for little more than basic transportation. Yet, anyone on a tight budget could undoubtedly appreciate the high mpg of this car. With 5 models to choose from the Toyota Yaris could be your option to fit your vehicle needs.
Value
Although still competitive in price with its subcompact competitors, unfortunately the Yaris loses its cheap car appeal in 2012; with the 3-door L starting at $14,115 (not including destination charges), it is several thousand dollars more expensive than when it originally debuted. It leaves the consumer questioning if there has been enough improvements to justify the increase in cost.
MPG Usage
With a cruising range of approximately 355 miles, you will be able to make a decent road trip or work-week commute without breaking the bank. Short of the coveted target of 40mpg, Yaris is just shy with 30/35–38 city/highway mpg range.
Safety
As a standard safety feature, the 2012 Yaris boasts nine airbags: including a rollover sensor, side-impact curtain airbags in front and rear seats, and driver-side knee airbag. All models have anti-lock brakes with rear drums for all models except for the SE which have four-wheel discs.
Interior Features
The repositioned driving instruments are major improvements from previous years design. The instruments are now aligned in front of the driver for easy viewing. The audio system is housed within accessible reach of the driver with large, easy to use controls. Smart feature upgrades for the interior 2012 models include a convenient fuel-economy meter monitor your gas usage. Dimensions have not significantly increased; however, it feels noticeably larger. What is noticeably lacking is the design detail of the seating. The seats are uncomfortable and without significant lumbar support. This feature may not be the purchasing deal breaker for the consumer who is more than likely using this vehicle as a substitute for public transportation.
Engine
The engine is a remnant from previous years; the 1.5-liter four-cylinder produces the same 106 hp and 103 lb-ft of torque. This is just not enough power for this subcompact. This leaves the Yaris driver struggling uphill and in the passing lane. As in previous years the five-speed manual gearbox is standard, while a four-speed automatic is a $1,000 additional option.
Exterior Features
Toyota expanded Yaris’s sedan version stating that consumers purchased the hatchback 70 percent of the time. The 2012 Yaris has a more chiseled exterior, which has given it an edgier appearance. This has intrinsically increased the appeal to a broader audience of car buyers. Below are the new dimensions of the 2012 Toyota Yaris.
Dimensions
Wheelbase: 98.8 in
Length: 153.5 in (L, LE); 154.7 in (SE)
Width: 66.7 in Height: 59.4 in
Curb weight: 2300–2350 lbs
Overall review
The Yaris took some positive initiatives forward for the 2012 models. However, the bottom line is the Yaris needs an engine which is quieter and more powerful, and upgraded seating design to distinguish themselves from their subcompact competitors. Overall, there is nothing new; all the notable changes in the 2012 Toyota Yaris are cosmetic and not performance related.
