Short stories: Christmas caroling

by Jennifer Vensel

Created on: December 20, 2011

She was so shy, but she had seen him in the bookstore so many times but never had the nerve to even say hi to him. Even now at Christmas she could have just said Happy Holidays. She had been in a relationship for so many years and she had ended it. She wanted something better and finally this guy was someone she felt that feeling for. That feeling that she could have his children and they could be spending Christmas together by the fire place and the kids would be opening presents by the tree.

She had to get his attention. She knew he would like her if he got to know her. They liked the same things. She had seen what he wore, what he read, what he ate, he was different than her but they shared similar interests. She had to be bold. She knew he lived in her neighborhood so she got to thinking about it. She thought that Christmas Caroling was a dying art but still acceptable in their town so why not.

She put on her best red sweater and gently put some make-up on so that it just enhanced her natural beauty. He was a natural guy and she was a natural girl she knew they would be perfect. Well, she just wanted to get to know him better so she didn’t dress too sexy. She wanted to look sexy but more for the girl next door look and less like a hooker who just knocked on his door. Maybe he wanted that, but then she wouldn’t want him so she hoped that was not the case.

It was a beautiful night. The snow was falling slowly. She loved the silent motion, and she hoped that her singing would be as emotional as this quiet snow filled night. She didn’t need any sheet music she knew the song by heart. She had sung “Oh, Holy Night” so many times in the car, in the shower, on the street wherever, as long as she knew no one was listening. She did not know how it was going to go when she saw his handsome face.

She got to his walkway and looked to see if he was home. She never thought that maybe he had a girlfriend, but she never saw him with anyone. She rubbed her mittened hands together and walked up to his door quickly before she chickened out. She knocked gently. She knew that it was not hard enough for anyone to hear. She raised her hand to knock again and the door opened. He looked a little scared, she looked at him scared. They were both just standing there.

“Can I help you,” he said.

“Hi,” she smiled and said. “I am a caroler, are you ready,”

“Yeah, I guess, he said. “Do people still do this?” Her legs began to shake and her lip began to quiver, but she took a deep breathe and began.

“Oh, Holy Night, the stars are brightly shining, this is the night of our dear savior’s birth.” She continued and hit every note. The highest one she got her usually queasiness but she got through it. When she was done he clapped and said thank you. He brought her a cookie and then said have a good night. The door was closed and that was the end of that. She couldn’t believe it. He didn’t even invite her in. She didn’t care she had so much fun doing it and overcoming her fear she didn’t mind. She turned around and walked into the beautiful snowy night and enjoyed being alone on the street with her feeling of excitement from doing something different.
