Tips to make your holiday travels safe

Traveling during the holidays can be a hard and stressful event. Holidays shouldn’t have to be about the trip, but instead about the destination. To help make that a possibility, there are many steps that can be taken to help make the task an easy and effortless one.

First and foremost, plan accordingly. If the weather is a known complication, it’s best to be prepared. Bring a few spare blankets, bottled water, flashlight (and extra batteries). In addition, be sure to include an emergency kit in the vehicle. Basic kits should at a minimum include jumper cables, tire gauge, bungee cords, duct tape, multi-function tool, flat head screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver, cable ties, shop cloths, and a first aid kit. Any car on the road should also have a tire iron, jack, and of course a spare tire.

Prior to leaving, check all tires for air pressure, and fill if needed. This is both for safety and economy, as properly filled tires drive the most efficiently. For similar reasons, it is also helpful to utilize a standard maintenance and  properly rotated and balanced tires.

Even when using GPS for directions, be sure to stow an up to date road map as back up. If unfamiliar with where traveling, it is best to review this information prior to starting out on the road. Sites such as http://www.safetravelusa.com/ offer information on weather and road conditions, specific to each state.

When traveling, a common mistake is not leaving enough time, and ending up inevitably rushed. This applies to traveling by air as well. Please consult your airline, and airport for details and specifications. Although most will advise to arrive four hours prior to departure to allow time for all processing through security, baggage claims, and boarding. Before arrival at the airport, it is necessary to confirm the flight, documents needed for identification, and what items are restricted (while packing), as this will save time and hassle come the day of taking any scheduled flight. Additional information is available at http://www.ifly.com/airport-tips.

No matter what, do not forget that traveling for anything, in particular the holidays, should be a fun experience. Stay positive and remember the people and events that are being traveled to. Let the stress filled moments just slide away, because in this case it matters not about the trip, but instead the destination.

Most of all, stay safe and happy travels!
