There is a glaringly obvious answer to this title.
Pick a mate who is better suited to you than Nick and Jessica were to eachother!
It is true that they seemed very much in love and much of the tv series showed a touching insight into two young people who clearly wanted the marriage to work. However, it was also plain that there were fundamental conflicts between the couple.
I accept that opposites attract but for this to work the opposites must be on a superficial level. There has to be a good foundation on which to base the relationship. This includes the basic values of each party and their upbringings and way of life. Nick was a very practical person, he wanted to have a "normal" life as much as possible and his attitude was that if there was a job that needed doing he would do it himself. Jessica, on the other hand, was a subscriber to the GALMI way of thinking - Get A Little Man In! Whatever the job, big or small, Jessica could not understand why she couldn't pay someone to take care of it. This is just one example of a basic value that the pair differed on.
Nick was somewhat of an action man, Jessica was a girly girl. Nick was grounded, Jessica was flighty. These are not criticisms of either, just facts which turned out to mean that the couple did not compliment eachother.
Of course this does not mean that couples like Jessica and Nick are doomed but it does mean that are likely to have to put a lot of work into the relationship. Both have to learn to compromise and not just accept but celebrate the differences between them and learn to use them to their advantage. This takes time and determination, things that Nick and Jessica may have been short on owing to their busy schedules but if you really love someone then you should be willing to do whatever it takes to make it work.
