Flooded basements can cause significant damage, loss of valuables and may require costly clean up. While there are many ways to prevent a flooded basement, the situation can still occur but steps can be taken to lessen the damage and make clean up easier. Homeowners in areas that are prone to heavy rain and floods should follow a few suggestions to make this type of emergency less of a burden. Initial steps if a flood is eminent include turning off electric and gas supplies while the area is accessible.
Sump pumps are an excellent option for advanced preparations. Unfortunately these do need to be installed before an emergency occurs. If a homeowner plans to rely on a sump pump, one should be installed with a battery back-up. Many flooding situations result in the loss of main electrical power. Sump pumps will only remove a standard amount of incoming water so they may not help with all types of emergencies.
Furniture and valuables:
Electronic equipment or valuable items should be kept off the basement floor. Items in storage areas can be kept in well-sealed plastic storage boxes. Antique or expensive furniture pieces should probably not be used in basements prone to flooding. If an emergency is eminent, heavy-duty trash bags can be used to protect furniture legs, pillows and other items that cannot be removed quickly. Keep a few spare plastic storage containers for quickly protecting smaller items including books, toys and hand-held electronics.
Water removal after flooding:
A simple pond pump is sufficient for removing standing water in a basement. A discharge hose will be required to direct water to an appropriate location. If ground water is causing the flooding, the water will need to be directed to an operating sewer line. Regular pond pumps do not have a low-water sensor for shut off so the pump will need to be monitored. A wet-dry shop vacuum can be used to remove smaller amounts of water left behind.
Clean up preparations:
The more quickly all areas can be dried, the less likely they will be prone to mold and mildew. One or more oscillating fans should be used after all standing water has been removed. Having the necessary cleaning supplies on hand will also make a flooded basement problem less of an ordeal. A quality disinfectant should be used all on surfaces that will not be damaged from usage.
If the flooding emergency has been caused by sewage back-up, a professional cleaning service is generally recommended. A pair of wading boots or high rain boots can be used to gain access for initial repair and clean up. Flooded areas should not be entered if there is any possibility of electrical problems.
Common causes for flooding include broken water pipes, sewer back-up, or clogged foundation drains. Each situation requires different repairs and clean up measures. If the flooding can be prevented in the first place, or at least minimized, there will be less damage and potential for mold growth. Routine checks on plumbing systems and regular maintenance on sewer systems can reduce flood risks.
