When your child is suffering from pain and fever, you want to help them as best you can to decrease these symptoms so that they can be comfortable. Pain and fever in children are a sign that something is going on in their bodies. Pain usually means that there is damage to bone or tissue, while fever indicates that there is bacteria invading the child's body.
There are many ways to reduce pain and fever in children, from home remedies to over the counter medications. Here are some tips for reducing pain and fever in children at home:
If your child has a fever, he will need plenty of liquids. Liquids can be given in the form of water, juice or pop sickles to make sure your child doesn't become dehydrated. Liquids can also be used to "wipe down" a feverish child and help reduce fever. You can also give your child a lukewarm bath to bring his fever down.
Warm moist wraps can be used for pain in children. Moisten a small towel, then heat it up in microwave. Use this heat pack on any painful area on the child's body to help relieve pain. Leave on only for 20 minutes at a time to prevent burns. A warm to hot (as hot as your child can stand it) bath can also help alleviate pain from injuries and body aches and pains.
Chicken soup:
Chicken soup has been used for many years for colds, coughs, fevers and pain. Chicken soup has been known to decrease inflammation. Inflammation usually accompanies pain in injuries and illness. Chicken soup is also a "soothing" food, so it can make your child comfortable by reducing pain and soothing him.
Chicken soup can also be used when a child has a fever. A fever can cause dehydration in a child. Chicken soup can be given to hydrate a fevered child and also provide needed nutrients so that the child's immune system can fight the fever.
Tylenol, or acetaminophen, is used as a pain and fever reducer. To give Tylenol to a child, an exact dosage measuring device, as is provided with children's liquid Tylenol, should be used to ensure proper dosage. When giving Tylenol to your child, be sure you do not "double dose" by giving cough or cold medicine with Tylenol.
Pay attention to label instructions on the Tylenol package. Follow the instructions on the label to ensure that you are giving the correct dosage according to age and weight of your child. Do not give Tylenol more frequently than what is recommended on the Tylenol package.
Motrin:
Motrin, or ibuprofen, is another over the counter medication
