With Christmas fast approaching, the malls are packed with shoppers eager to tick off gifts from the list. Children have written wishes to Santa Claus. Santa's elves are busy wrapping presents. For those who just wish to give presents to children (e.g. , nieces, nephews), there are plenty to choose from without wasting precious time scouring the store shelves for the latest cool toy.
1. Books
The power of the written word fuels the imagination. By giving books, children are encouraged to read. The joy of reading is seldom experienced by kids these days because this simple pleasure often takes a backseat when the lure of technology is strong. Children (and adults also) these days watch too much television and spend too much time in the Internet.
2. Writing materials
Alongside reading, writing is a skill that kids can develop. It does not have to be a literary piece. By giving a child tools for writing, there is a venue for self-expression. Whatever the imagination that is fueled by reading, the child can channel creativity into a written work. Include some crayons to bring out the artistic aspect of the child.
3. Rubber shoes
Kids should be able to run outside and play (within the watchful eyes of a responsible guardian). In a "Call to Activity" primer published by the United States Department of Health and Human Services, kids and adolescents alike are encouraged to get involved in outdoor activates because it is "important for healthy growth and development. With this activity in mind, good running shoes will give proper support for those active limbs. Young kids should be exposed to a healthy lifestyle so that they make healthy choices in the future.
4. Clothes
Kids need clothes. They grow up fast so new clothes are much welcomed especially by parents. However, this is quite tricky because choosing the right size may be a challenge. It would help to verify size from parents. Choose a material that is comfortable. Clothes made with cotton are safe bets.
5. Bank account
Start them young, they say. Kids should learn the value of saving for the rainy day. By helping them open a bank account, kids can learn to budget and set goals. Saving becomes routine and it becomes a habit eventually. This kind of gift may require parental involvement when opening an account. Another option is to issue a 'For Deposit only' check as a gift so the child (and parents) will be forced to put it in a bank.
Christmas is for children, they often say. While everyone has the freedom to choose gifts they may prefer to give, it is more meaningful to give gifts that can be learning and nurturing tools for children.
