A guide to podcasting

groups (such as the CRTC in Canada and the FCC in the United States of America), who decide who is allowed access to the airwaves, and under what conditions. One justification for this control is that there is a limited amount of broadcast frequencies available. However, on the internet, there is no need for such regulation, as there is no limit on the amount of podcasts that can be made available within one geographical area.

Stemming from this is another area in which podcasting provides a benefit over traditional media: there exists a wider diversity of access among the podcasting communities. Due to the licensing of radio waves, as well as the costs involved in maintaining broadcast capability, traditional radio broadcasting favours those in a higher economic bracket, as well as giving preference to those who are more "mainstream" in their lifestyle and culture. Podcasting, like all web-based technology, gives wider access to traditionally disadvantaged groups, such as those in lowersocio -economic positions, members of subcultural groups, and fringe political groups. Allowing a preponderance of voices access to the media can improve society in many ways.

One last benefit of podcasting is that it allows more media access to non-profitable causes. Under the traditional capitalist theory, a company or cultural concern is not only required to be profitable, it must prove itself to be more profitable than an alternative investment. As a result of this, media concerns are becoming increasingly dominated by large corporations, and those concerns increasingly limit themselves to the most mainstream of content. In contrast, many podcasters are hobbyists, updating their podcasts in their free time and in addition to their other commitments. This again allows increased media access to those who have not chosen communications and media as their career path, and also allows for discussion of topics that would not be considered 'profitable', ranging from book discussions, to dramatic readings, to independent musical productions.

Podcasting is a unique, complex form of media that stands poised to become a major form of communication in the coming years. It allows for widespread access to broadcasting technology, and gives increased access to those who would not otherwise be able to use broadcast technology to express themselves.
