In the process known as metabolism, the body uses hormones and enzymes to convert food to energy, and to burn calories. Lack of exercise, a high-fat diet and medical conditions such as underactive thyroid can decrease metabolism and cause weight gain. Your doctor can determine the cause of weight gain, and can prescribe helpful lifestyle changes or medications. You may want to ask your doctor about trying herbal remedies to boost your metabolism.
Kelp
Kelp is a type of seaweed that helps regulate thyroid function. It contains a natural precursor to thyroid hormone, and is also rich in vitamins, minerals and iodine. According to Vitamins to Health, researchers believe that the iodine and thyroid hormone precursors work together to increase fat metabolism. Kelp contains high levels of nutrients, including B-complex, calcium, magnesium and trace minerals. You can take kelp pills or capsules or use dried kelp flakes as a salt substitute.
Green tea
Whether you enjoy regular green tea or prefer decaffeinated, you may be able to boost your metabolism with this beverage. According to a 1999 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, green tea appears to increase thermogenesis, which is body heat elevation not caused by physical exertion. The study suggests that thermogenesis combines with increased fat oxidation to boost metabolism.
Green tea’s metabolism-boosting properties are present in both caffeinated and decaffeinated teas. The tea increased metabolism without adrenal or cardiac overstimulation. Drink a cup of green tea every day or take a green tea supplement according to label instructions.
Siberian ginseng
Siberian ginseng is an herb which helps the body recover from mental and physical stresses. The herb contains compounds known as eleutherosides, which strengthen the adrenal glands and regulate protein metabolism. In addition to its metabolism-boosting properties, it is popular among athletes and students because it helps improve energy and concentration levels.
Siberian ginseng is available in capsule or tincture form, and must be taken for several weeks before it is effective. If you have high blood pressure, ask your doctor before you try this herb, which can interact with blood pressure medications.
Cayenne pepper
Cayenne pepper contains capsaicin, a natural stimulant which gives the pepper its hot, spicy quality. Research suggests that capsaicin may boost metabolism and prevent weight gain. In a 1986 study published in the Journal of Nutrition, capsaicin appeared to increase lipid metabolism in rats that were fed a high fat diet. Researchers gave the rats quantities of capsaicin comparable to the amount typically ingested by people in rural Thailand. If you enjoy spicy food, try adding cayenne to some of your favorite dishes.
Conclusion
Herbal supplements are available at natural food stores, drug stores, and online. Consult a physician if you are concerned about weight gain or if you are having trouble losing weight. If you are pregnant or nursing, or if you take prescription medications, talk to your doctor before you try any natural remedy. Ask your doctor about the use of herbal remedies to boost your metabolism.
