The Christmas Princess

The moment the door to her bedroom closed, Mya pushed the covers back. Getting up as quietly as she could, now that prayers were said, good-night kisses and sweet dream wishes complete, there was still one thing left to do before going to sleep, and it was Mya's secret. Tip-toeing to the window, drawing back the curtains just enough to peek outside into the moonless night, Mya looked first for the brightest star upon which to make her wish, and then to the well below, where the fairies lived, to see if the Fairy Princess was there.

As soon as her jade-green eyes adjusted to the dim starlight, holding her forever-friend, Teddy, she made her wish, the same wish she had made for as long as she could remember.

"Star bright, Holy night, I wish I were a princess tonight," she whispered softly, more like the breeze of a flower opening to greet the morning sun.

Outside, the lawn and the well were covered with a feathery coat of snow. The farm animals were quiet, safe and warm in their beds of fresh straw she had made for them earlier in the day. Wisps of snow swirled about here and there, tossed about by the cold wind shivering through the maple trees.

"It's too cold, she won't come tonight," Mya said to Teddy as she drifted off to sleep. "Christmas will be here soon, you know, and I really wish I could be a princess for Christmas, a real princess, even if only for one day."

Later, as the night closed in, Mya slept, dreaming of being a real princess on Christmas morning. She didn't feel the gentle touch of the Fairy Princess when she gently pushed back a lock of red hair from Mya's eyes, gently smiling, the Princess touched her hand with her magic wand.

The days and nights flew quickly by as winter cold and snow arrived and Christmas excitement began to fill the air. Inside the farmhouse, every room seemed to turn red, green, silver and gold overnight as holiday decorations of all descriptions appeared everywhere from nowhere. A splendid Christmas tree appeared in the living room, decorated with lights and ornaments, rainbow garland, sparkling tinsel and glowing strings of twinkling star lights. With joyful singing and hearts filled with expectation, Mya's brother had the honor of placing the treetop angel and blowing a golden horn, at the top.

On weekends, neighbors and relatives became frequent visitors, bringing armloads of presents which were stacked in any available space, then gathering in the parlor to share holiday stories, feasting on Mother's
