Pixar has been known for 15 years to make high quality movies that dazzle people of all ages with their cinematic beauty, innovative plotlines, and lovable characters. Cars 2, Pixar's most recent release, was certainly the hit movie of this past summer, grossing over half a billion dollars in theaters. This movie certainly lives up to the Pixar hype of having good animation and amazing visuals. However, the film is certainly lacking in a plotline that will stick with viewers after the film is done.
That isn't to to say the film isn't decent; on the contrary, the film will seem wonderful to younger kids, with its funny humor and adventurous characters. But when compared to previous Pixar installments, movies that can show intimacy and compassion in creative ways, the movie is certainly lacking. For example, Up, released in 2009, managed to illustrate a wonderful story about the love of two people in a five minute scene, all without spoken words.
Now, the genre of Cars 2 is obviously not necessarily a movie for such emotions, and that is understandable. Unfortunately for Pixar, however, there seems to be very little of any emotion at all in the film. The plotline seems to be a traditional "fish out of water" story that has been created by several different film companies numerous times, with very few of them adding anything new to the genre. The characters seem one-dimensional and crude, and throughout the film, I found it very difficult to care about the fate of the heroes. This mere fact shocked me, as all the other Pixar films left me in deep contemplation upon leaving the theater after each showing.
As previously stated, perhaps my review is so slanderous because I am not a member of the movie's target audience. For youngsters, the film will be a great movie. The movie also certainly paves the way for a new line of Cars merchandise, pf which total sales match (if not exceed) the total gross of the movie itself. Although it is my belief that that was Pixar's intent, seeing as Cars was able to create a mass market for toys and various other products, From the perspective of an adult, however, I can only hope that this is Pixar's one and only flub in their movie-making endeavors, and despite this mistake, I will certainly be seeing their upcoming movie, Brave, with high expectations.
