While there is no way to entirely avoid every choking hazard there is. There are some things you can do to help avoid it happening. You can not always see everything that may be a choking hazard, it is a good idea to crawl around at your babies level. See what your baby See's, he will see so much more on the floor then you do from where you stand.
If you have any doubt about an object you think could pose a potential choking hazard, us the toilet paper roll method. If you can drop the object through a toilet paper roll freely, then it is possible your baby can choke on it. Throw the object away or put it somewhere your baby as well as older kids cannot reach it.
Vacuuming and sweeping your floor regularly will also help keep potential hazards out of your baby's reach. When my kids were little we vacuumed the floor twice a day. If it is possible for you to vacuum or sweep twice, then great. If not try and do it every other day. You will not only get all the dirt and tiny things up, but if there are bigger items on the floor that your baby can choke on you will hit it with the vacuum or broom and will become aware that it is there.
I have personal experience with this subject. My 7 month old was fed a bang barrette by her older sister while I was switching laundry. The type of barrette that most parents have in their barrette drawer or basket. There is no clasp on this type of barrette to keep it closed. They just pop open and shut. Need less to say the barrette was lodged in her throat and she stopped breathing. She was life flighted to a children's hospital after she swallowed the barrette. There she was taken to surgery and had the clip removed from her stomach.
So you see, some things are beyond our control. While accidents can still occur, it is best to keep one eye open for small every day items that are potential hazards.
