Book Review of
THE MARSHALL PLAN FOR GETTING YOUR NOVEL PUBLISHED: 90 Strategies and Techniques for Selling Your Fiction
by Evan Marshall
2003, Writer's Digest Books
The Marshall Plan for Getting Your Novel Published, by Evan Marshall, is packed with tips from a successful agent and author with over thirty years of experience. This one has information and suggestions you won't find in other books.
The book is divided into three sections:
Writing
Submitting Your Work
Publishing
The section about writing covers viewpoint, action, summary, dialogue, feelings, thoughts, and background. The section about submitting your work deals with timing, query letters, synopses, cover letters, and agents. The publishing section addresses working with editors and publishers.
There are no recaps or exercises at the chapter ends, but the author does include lots of meaningful examples. Marshall also provides a glossary of terms, a sample query letter, a sample cover letter, a sample long synopsis, and a sample short synopsis. An index is available for easy reference.
This book was published after the Marshall Plan for Writing a Novel, and provides both more detail and a broader scope than the first book. The writing section summarized much of the material already presented in the first book, but also provides more specific tips. The sections about submitting your work and publishing go well beyond the scope of the first book. To get the full benefit of Evan Marshall's expertise, you really need both books.
