The best Christmas movies are not necessarily about Santa Claus, but tell timeless stories that make you feel good or make you laugh while incorporating the spirit of the season. For the old movies on this list, stick with the original black and white ones for a truly nostalgic experience.
Joyeux Noel (2006)
While Joyeux Noel is not yet a classic, it could very well be. Set during World War I, this Oscar-nominated movie will strike a note with even the toughest guy. Joyeux Noel tells the true story of enemy troops whose longing for peace on earth amidst one of the most destructive periods in world history puts one special Christmas Eve into perspective.
A Christmas Carol/Scrooge (1951)
Based on a Charles Dickens classic, this movie centers on Ebenezer Scrooge whose character was shaped into the miserly, bitter man he is because of a painful past. Regardless of circumstances, everyone can relate and take a ride along with Scrooge’s ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. For maximum impact, definitely watch the original black and white version. Even if you’ve seen it before, it never gets old. A Christmas Carol also made the phrase “bah humbug” famous.
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989)
As far as comedies are concerned, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation starring Chevy Chase is one of the funnies ones, and it just happens to be one of the best Christmas movies. While punctuated with hilarious one-liners, it also shows the love/hate relationship families have with Christmas and how the material things can get in the way. This movie will leave the viewer appreciative and even reflective in the end, despite the hilarious factor.
Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
Although the remake from 1994 fares better than many, the 1947 classic is the way to go. While the story line may seem dark to someone who has never seen the movie, it is balanced by subtle humor. Miracle on 34th Street also illustrates family values and appeals to the young as well as the young at heart. Kris Kringle’s embodiment of Christmas is still unique, even after all these years. This Christmas movie is a must for children.
It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
This movie, while initially a flop at the box office, has become a staple in many households for the Christmas season. While the story line encompasses decades and only towards the end incorporates Christmas, it perfectly illustrates the spirit of the season. While the great James Stewart in the role of George Bailey will appeal to older generations or those who long for simpler times, even cynical teenagers will fall in love with the character of Clarence, the disheveled angel in training, by way of his child-like innocence cloaked in an old body.
