A Macrobiotic diet is based on a regional all-natural nutrition, which means an individual eats the organic foods that are available in the area they are residing in. The diet does not include fatty-red meats.
Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine was the first known written advocate of a macrobiotic diet. In macrobiotics health is a dynamic balance between yin and yang. Sickness therefore, is a condition of imbalance occurring from a blockage or from difficult transitions between the yin and yang. Macrobiotic principles are used in an attempt to minimize these situations and to return the body to health as soon as possible.
Changes in the season, climate, diet, environment, stress levels and all of life will require adjustments in order to accomplish the goal of a well-balanced diet. Macrobiotics then can be considered more of a lifestyle, rather than a diet.
The diet is rich in brown rice, and other whole cereal grains, vegetables, beans and legumes, miso soup, sea vegetables and traditional or naturally processed foods. Fish and seafood, seeds and nuts, including nut butters, fruits, sweeteners and seasonings are included on a more infrequent basis. Macrobiotic healing is not medicine as it uses no medications or surgery. Macrobiotic practices aim to make the most out of each person’s life, taking into account each person’s constitution, in order to give them a longer, healthier life than they might enjoy otherwise. During the ages, macrobiotics has become very popular for persons with or susceptible to cancer as both a adjunct treatment and as a prevention tool.
In macrobiotic principles, just as there is a natural order to wellness, there is a natural transition to illness as well.
There are seven stages of sickness: 1) Fatigue. The first sign of sickness is fatigue. There are many causes of fatigue or mental dullness including; too much acidity in the body, reduction in the oxygen supply to the body, too much fat in the blood, low red blood cell count, low blood
sugar, poor circulation from a lack of exercise, too much exercise that is strenuous, constipation, diarrhea, over working, over eating and too much stress.
2) Aches and Pain. The first pain to arrive is usually a headache or an injury acquired due to fatigue. There are both acute pains (think of a cut or a bruise) or pain that we learn to live with. Medications kill the messenger, by shutting down the warning system. We also learn to just ignore pain, when this happens, often
