If you hate the crowds, traveling to normally popular destinations off seasons can help you to beat the crowds. This is particularly important when you are traveling to destinations where crowds can become a hassle, such as beaches, resorts, theme parks, or casinos. By avoiding these crowds, you are able to accomplish considerably more during your trip and hopefully it will make it that much more enjoyable as you won't be waiting in lines as long.
However, there are a few things that you have to keep in mind when you are traveling off season. When you are traveling to areas such as Orlando Florida off season, you will find that all of the major area attractions such as Universal Studios, Disney World, Gatorland, and other attractions are still open. But you have to realize that they are going to have substantially reduced hours, sometimes 3-5 hours less per day. This could mean that you have to better budget your time to ensure that you are able to take the most advantage of these destinations. This means arriving early so that you can get to the park when it opens and stay until it closes.
If you are traveling with a group of young adults without children and you are looking to have fun and entertainment, especially at night in these areas, you could find other issues, like I did during my trip to Universal this last January. While attempting to go to the area night clubs, my girlfriend and I found that virtually everything was dead or closed. It was nearly impossible to find a place that had enough people to really enjoy it. This meant that we couldn't find any live music, we couldn't find any good comedy clubs, no dueling pianos, no group shots, nothing. It was completely dead. However in the spring through fall there are so many people in the area that you have to wait for hours to get into a lot of the clubs. So keep this in mind. I have a lot more fun drinking with people, but if you enjoy drinking alone, then you will probably have a good time.
The parks being dead can be quite exciting however, as you don't have to wait nearly as long as you normally would to see the rides and shows. This means that you are much more likely to be able to see everything that each park has to offer and still be able to go on your favorite rides multiple times. During the normal season, even if you got there early and stayed all day with the extended hours, you most likely wouldn't be able to hit every ride, let alone ride a single ride multiple times. This is a huge advantage to going in the off season. The unfortunate side is that sometimes rides normally made for 16 people will only have 2 and some rides just aren't quite as exciting when you are all alone on it. Without everyone else screaming it really takes away some of the thrill of the ride. It seems that the other people are what really help to pump up the ride and make it seem super exciting.
Another thing to remember is that not all places are open during off seasons. A lot of the local businesses close down for the season, especially tourist related shops, and those that stay open, generally have heavily modified hours of operation. This of course be create a hassle if you aren't aware of the local hours of operation of the businesses. Make sure that you communicate with your hotel to ensure that you aren't missing out on your last chance to find dinner, because even the traditionally 24 hour restaurants close early in some of the tourist towns.
