Making even minor do-it-yourself car fixes can be intimidating if not downright scary. It is possible to make some do-it-yourself car fixes which can potentially save a great deal of money.

Diagnostic and Service Manual is essential to DIY car repairs

One do-it-yourself car fix involves having the proper manual, which is essential for every car owner to have. If you have attempted to diagnose and perform a DIY car fix or you know someone who has attempted car repairs on their own, then you most likely know someone who misdiagnosed the problem and paid a tidy sum for parts, only to discover that the problem was not what it was thought to be. This wastes time and money since those parts are most likely not returnable.

ALLDATA DIY is a very reliable online source to obtain the proper DIY instructions for car repairs. While it may cost a nominal fee to obtain the manual for your specific vehicle, it is indeed far lower than the costs you may incur by making your own diagnosis without a proper diagnostic and repair manual for your car. Without the proper manual you may purchase parts, spend the time and labor to make the repair and then have to pay for additional diagnosis, parts, repair and labor to get the car problem accurately diagnosed and repaired. ASE Certified Master Technician Mark Gittelman tells of a man who said he could not afford $29.99 for a manual. He misdiagnosed the problem and over time spent nearly $2,000 for proper diagnosis and repair – because he could not “afford” the $29.99 manual!

Change the oil and filter

Some resources give instructions on changing the oil with the car raised, while other sources recommend that you not raise your car, explaining that “the main reason for this is safety concerns and convenience.”  In the article “Oil Change Tips,”  it is further explained that “the most dangerous part of being a do-it-yourself mechanic is lifting your vehicle in the driveway without the proper equipment and safety precautions.” For some vehicles, however, it may not be possible to change the oil unless the vehicle is raised. Use utmost safety precautions and equipment if doing so.

Have everything you need before getting started, such as proper wrenches, container to collect the runoff, oil filter and funnel. Make sure you are using the proper oil for your car by checking your owner’s manual.

Run the car for ten minutes or so, just long enough
