Brewer’s Hill is a neighborhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin located about a mile north of downtown. It is named for the owners and workers at the local breweries especially Schlitz who used to live here. This is a neighborhood that has undergone a renaissance. After the breweries left the neighborhood went downhill and in the 1960’s and 70’s was quite rundown. Over the last 20 or so years it has made a comeback. In 2008, T
his Old House named it one of the best old house neighborhoods in the Midwest. There are many beautiful Victorian, Greek Revival and Italianate homes in the area. Mixed with the gorgeous mansions are the homes of the workers sometimes it seems as if they are side by side.
The average home in the neighborhood runs around $225,000. A home that needs some TLC can sell as low as $150,000 and renovated homes up to and beyond $300,000. Some of the larger homes have been divided into condos which are more affordable than single family homes. Brewer’s Hill is indeed on a hill that overlooks the Milwaukee River and offers some stellar views. Public transportation is available on the edge of the neighborhood and makes commuting to downtown easy. The neighborhood has the Milwaukee River and Pleasant Street on the south, Holton Street on the East, North Street on the north and Martin Luther King Drive on the west. This is primarily a residential neighborhood but there are a few good restaurants in the area.
Root Restaurant was created by the union of a chef and a farmer. It has been around since 2004 and these days the owner is the chef who still collaborates with the farmer. Roots provides organic and locally sourced food to its appreciative patrons. It serves lunch, dinner and brunch.
The Dr. George Washington Carver Academy is located within the neighborhood. It offers classes for children from Kindergarten to 8th grade. While the test scores are not too high at this school, the parents and students are very supportive and happy with the teachers and staff.
When residents want to go grocery shopping there is a Whole Foods Market and a Metro Market both within just a couple of miles. For the full mall shopping experience, The Shops of Grand Avenue are downtown which is only about a mile away. There are loads of shops and restaurants and parking is discounted with receipts from stores at the Shops.
If you are looking for a friendly revitalized neighborhood in Milwaukee, Brewer’s Hill is the perfect place. It offers lovely historic homes and a great location that is convenient to everything that Milwaukee has to offer.
