Having grown up on a lake in southeast massachusetts I learned to fish at a very young age. Initially I started off rowing an old leaking fiberclass boat my father got for $50 at a yard sale. I eventually learned to fiberglass, reinforced the boat and added a 1960 3hp outboard and an old electric trolling motor. What I learned as I upgraded my gear is that it does not matter if you have a $20,000 bass boat, or a $50 leaking rowboat. The locations and conditions to catch fish are the same. Here is what I do,
Large/Small mouth bass
Hour either side of dusk and dawn, on sunny day, neon floating lures, or dark scented rubber worms. Both work well. Cast down wind, near debris (trees, stumps) Once you cast let the lure sit about 2-3 seconds before reeling in at varied speeds. Halfway back to the boat, stop the lure for a couple of seconds as well. A cast width fishing spot can be worked for 45min or better. If it's sunny, use shady areas, and weed beds. Dark worms work the best.
Pike/Pickeral
Dusk/Dawn on sunny days, anytime on rainy/overcast days. Any lure works in open water. The best time to catch them is during the days with steady rain using large 3 hook silver and black floating lures reeled very fast and paused just before returning to the boat. Don't pick it up by the mouth like a bass....huge teeth learned the hard way.
Sunfish/perch
IN shallows, using a bobber hook combo baited with anything from a worm to chewing gum. Easiest fish to catch and the first fish I ever caught. It was also the first fish I learned NOT to grab as those fins cut like glass!
Catfish/Eels
Nighttime (after 11pm) near the shore with a hook and lighted bobber
