Fear is a necessary emotion if you face a growling bear on a hiking trip. It helps elevate your adrenaline levels so you can fight or flee the threat facing you. But in today's modern society, fear is a negative emotion that only creates unhealthy conditions. With all the stress and pressures life imposes, many people live in constant fear and create for themselves high blood pressure and a host of other diseases.
Fear has its place. But what can you do other than worry yourself over bill payments and a marriage headed for the rocky shores of divorce? There are some points you can keep in mind the next time fear comes knocking on your door.
What Do You Fear?
It's a reasonable question. Once you realize that what you fear really isn't worth spending time worrying about, you'll feel more peaceful and happy. The truth is that what you fear most seldom comes to pass. There are so many variables in your future that they often prove that your worst fears will become nothing more than a mere fantasy.
Discuss Your Fear
Discussing your fears with someone else can alleviate the stress and pressure you live under. By just telling someone what you're afraid of, you often find a simple solution to the problem that gets rid of the fear altogether. Keep in mind that your situation is not unique. Thousands have faced the same problems and overcome them. If you can't discuss your fears with someone with a willing ear, you can always read biographies on the lives of people who have overcome your kind of fear.
Face Your Fear
Due to an overactive imagination, your fears are often blown out of proportion. Just by facing them, you discover that the fear just melts away. You may even discover that you have far more strength and creativity to solve most any problem without the need to fear them. The act of facing your fears makes you a better person as it teaches discipline and increases your self-esteem.
Get Active
You can spend your life with the fear of death and dying, or you can get active and do something worthwhile with your life. No one can turn back the clock. By getting active, you pull your thoughts away from what you fear and into productive channels. When death comes, as it will, you won't have any time to worry about the inevitable. Live life to the full by doing the things you love. Making something of your life leaves a legacy for your family and friends that you didn't waste your time wallowing in fear and worry.
Get a Right Perspective
Life is meant to be lived, not spent in years of depression and anxiety. Since you only have one life to live, you might as well get rid of those ungrounded fears and challenge yourself to grow into your full potential. Everyone can make life a glowing diamond or waste years in abject poverty because they did not have the courage to face life with all its fears, doubts and worries.
Stay Positive
It's a given that today's world is filled with war and troubles. Staying positive is hard to do, but if you hope to weather this particular period of troubled human history, keeping upbeat is the only way you'll survive. Nothing can drag you into the depths of fear and despair than associating with negative minded people. To stay upbeat, you need to read good books and engage in practices like meditation and Tai chi that help to calm the body and relax the mind.
You may never need to face a saber toothed tiger, but you can learn to overcome your fears and make life far more rewarding, peaceful and happy.
