Poetry: Mass suicide

by Sophie Martin

Created on: November 27, 2011

Ungainly fingers fumble as we reach for a glistening bag,

Upon hearing the screech of the mass-produced plastic our jowly maws begin to slaver.

Our massive bellies hang below the belt-line,

swaying with every step of our waddling gait.

Self-loathing is at an all-time high,

Gluttony is comfort on the cheap.

Average life spans plummet as fast food empires grow,

around the world it's starting to show,

we are committing suicide.

Slowly, rapidly, our gullets fill.

A obese man cannot wait, drools for his next meal.

Irony is lost on the masses, we still say we're starving.

Fleshy paunches expand into layered folds,

Pocked with purple stretching marks.

Hospitals buy machinery once used to weigh elephants,

Necessary because most patients are too large.

We are commiting senseless suicide.

Most of us don't expect to die crushed by the wieght of our fat,

with a tube down the throat, needles in our veins,

at the age of fifty-or-so.

But why care when we unwrap our greasy, cheesy dollar burger?

Or swallow every bit of a sweet, caramel coffee drink?

We readily, joyously, commit suicide.
