How to be armed for spiritual warfare

by Angela S. Young

Created on: November 27, 2011

When discussing spiritual warfare, there are several things one must know in order to be well-armed for the battle.  These involve seeing the battle, knowing the enemy, putting on one’s armor, and gathering other resources available to the Christian soldier.

1.  Recognize the battle.   To enter into the spiritual battle, one must first recognize that the battle exists.  This battle is not one we see with our eyes, but one that is real none-the-less.  It is very real, and a person must see the forces coming against him in order to fight it.  Otherwise, the Christian soldier is blindsided by the wiles of the devil.

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” Ephesians 6:12 KJV

2.  Know your enemy.  The above passage reminds us that our enemy is not the world or our fellow soldiers. Our battle is spiritual.  It is against the “rulers of darkness” and “spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”  So many Christians spend their time battling people.  This is one of the deceptions of spiritual battle.  If the hosts of hell can keep you busy fighting others, you will not battle him or be aware of the battle going on around you.

3.  Put on the armor of God.   Ephesians 6:11 admonishes us to “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”  It is a foolish soldier who goes into battle unprepared.  The following are the parts of the armor.

a)  “Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth.” (Ephesians 6:14a)  The belt of truth is what holds everything together and comes first because the truth is what the battle is all about.  Satan and his minions seek to distort the truth and deceive people, so that they will accept counterfeit over truth.  This truth is Jesus Christ, who said, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” (John 14:6) It is only through knowing and accepting the truth of Jesus Christ that we can don this belt of truth.

b)  “and having on the breastplate of righteousness;” (Ephesians 6:14b)  The breastplate protects the heart and other vital organs.  It is not our righteousness; it is the righteousness of Christ that He gives us in exchange
