Exciting gifts for twenty-somethings

by Simon Wright

Created on: November 25, 2011

It’s always difficult to attribute shared characteristics to a demographic group, so it’s important to consider the individual interests and attitudes of loved ones before buying them a gift. Doing this will greatly improve your chances of choosing a present that they will appreciate, than if you simply assume that they will like an item that has been heralded as the must-have present for their age group.

Having made this important caveat, there are some general behaviours and attributes that may typically apply to the twenty-something peer group that may help direct your choice of gift. For example, people in their twenties will often either by at college or starting a career, may well still be single, and are often interested in sport, gadgets, fashion, entertainment, music and socialising. We can then take this knowledge (especially where you know it applies to the person you are buying for) to consider gift ideas that will delight.

Gifts for sporty twenty-somethings:

Many young people enjoy participating in sport or going to the gym. They are often time rich but money poor, so gifts that help them afford things they might not otherwise be able to justify are likely to go down well. If they play sport, then that opens up a huge choice of sporting equipment that might be a good addition to what they already have. For example, a keen tennis player might fancy a better graphite tennis racket, whilst a golf fanatic may need a new putter which they hope will change their putting “luck”.

An interest in sports also opens opportunities to buy sporting-related clothing. This could range from a football or soccer top, to a nice tracksuit, or specialist footwear. Of course, many people in their twenties also avidly watch sport and that offers the potential to buy them tickets to see their favourite team.

Entertainment and music:

CDs, DVDs and computer games usually go down very well with the twenty-something audience. People often get heavily into music in their late teens and by their twenties they’re busy expanding their music collection and sometimes broadening their genre tastes. Care needs to be taken to ensure you get them something from a band that they like, and something they don’t already have, so it’s often advisable to ask them if there’s a particular album that they would like. Or get them a gift voucher.

Similarly, people in their twenties often spend a lot of their spare time watching DVDs or playing
