Managing change in business effectively

by Dennis Aubuchon

Created on: November 25, 2011

The present economic times require that companies adapt to survive.  This sometimes requires several changes within the structure and policy of a company or organization.  Change in business is inevitable.  Changes in demand for products and services provided by companies and organizations require different approaches and an analysis as to why the demand is changing.  Specifics identified by a proper analysis will identify the approach required to address the changes in demand.

Managing change in business is not limited to the management of a company or organization as changes which take place also affect us as individuals.  We as individuals have different personalities and as such the changes taking place in society within businesses or organizations and how we react are related to our personalities.  This part of the change environment today is much overlooked except by us as individuals.  Managing change can be difficult but if we approach it as an opportunity to expand both our knowledge and expertise it will be easier to adapt.

It is also important to note that some individuals do not readily accept change and for them they will have difficulties in accepting the changes needed in the economy of today.  The economic environment of today, as previously mentioned will require many changes in some organizations while the structure in others have processes in place to make change easier to manage.  Another aspect of managing change in business is the approach taken by management to inform their employees of the changes and why they are needed.  This is an important element in the business world.

Employees who may know changes are coming will be more receptive in accepting the required changes if they are explained to them.  This may not be easy in some instances while in others it will.  Changes are not necessarily always positive but they also involve negative ones.  Negative changes in an organization require the same informative approach by management to help employees understand.  This will not only help them but give them an opportunity to make decisions for themselves and their families.  When these discussions take place is up to management but they must take place from management rather than an outsider of the organization.

Positive changes in an organization are easier to accept such as the business or organization is expanding which helps to secure the jobs currently in place.  Expansion can involve changes in the assignment of employees to different functions or responsibilities.  This may be the result of expertise that needs to have dedicated individuals for specific functions to better enhance the organization.  These kinds of changes in assignments must also be understood by the employees involved with a one on one discussion to some extent while others may involve a group discussion.

Changes in business are going to be a part of our future as they have been in the past.  The current technological environment today is creating change at a faster pace than before and as such they take place more quickly.  This is required to keep abreast of changes taking place in society and within competitors.  This businesses and organizations must do to continue to be successful.
