“Last Orders”
The bar-slut called;
I only just made it in time
To order a cocktail
And put an end to today’s woes.

“Time, Gentlemen, please” he called,
Gathering up the now empty glasses
Of regulars who had long since vacated the bar
Leaving me to declare
“A time-machine please with no ice
To take me forwards into the past
And backwards into the future”!

Others in the bar looked at me in disbelief
And others in disgust.
“That’s a strange request; will I do”
Asked one dyke with a rather large bust!
“It ain’t any stranger than thee or ‘im, but ‘e ain’t strange just bleedin’ queer”
Mocked some miserable old bitch I would soon rather ignore
Than feel even the slightest milligram of lust.

Today, time and tide increasingly appear to wait for no man
And certainly not for me as the years all too quickly pass;
Too fast to think and yet too slow at times to prevent from being able to retire,
A few more hours in the day or days in the week is what I often require
To be able to do all I need or want to do with the minimum of fuss
Without continually feeling I am rushing, or being pushed, to catch life’s last bus.

You see, dear friends, time like money is fast spent
And unless one manages it well, it soon goes without one appreciating just where it went;
On occasions it can make one happy, on other occasions quite sad,
Whilst having too much of it on one’s hands can easily drive one mad!
But today, when the days grow ever shorter and the nights soon draw in,
I increasingly find wasting time, no less than a lack of time,
In which to do life’s necessities
Let alone indulge in life’s luxuries,
All too often turns one’s attempts to live a life of righteousness
Into a life of debauchery and sin!
