“YOU HAVE TO HAVE A DREAM TO MAKE A DREAM COME TRUE”!
What is a dream but the overflowing of one’s thoughts from the previous day,
Or perhaps a vision for the future?
In either event one hopes that some of the more pleasant things one dreams about come true,
And that less pleasant things die as one rises from one’s sleep to face another day.
At times it would be nice not to dream at all
But, for once, empty one’s mind of all thoughts and enjoy a few hours respite
From all the hustle and bustle life brings,
To enable one to enjoy the peace and quiet one experiences when one is still.
At other times one prefers to dream in order to escape
And transport oneself back in time,
Either to be with once familiar faces in once familiar places,
Now long lost or forgotten along life’s line.
Increasingly, as I grow old and feel things slipping out of my control,
I long to return to the safety and security of yesteryear
When, apart from my balls (as opposed to my latter-day marbles),
I was pleased to have all my own teeth and, believe it or not, a full head of hair;
And perhaps a better appreciation of my consonants and vowels
Or do I mean more-able management of my continence and bowels?!
Alas, perhaps, that is indeed a sign, I am no longer the youth I was,
For whilst I still do not know all the answers to life’s questions,
I feel more able, if not always comfortable,
To answer others who ask, “It’s all because …”!
“Because of what” one might well ask,
As I inevitably do;
When I sit and think and/or subconsciously speak in my sleep,
Of, and about, lesser mortals than you, you, you and you!
Today, in the company of understanding friends, I feel I am a free man,
Yet at other times I feel as though I have been tried, found guilty and duly sentenced,
To a life behind bars; a place where there is little liberty and still less opportunity,
Than in an arguably more serious game than Monopoly where one is told
“Go straight to jail; do not pass “go”; and do not collect £200”!
I look around and see others also plagued with severe nxiety and depression,
Some desperate enough for a sense of structure in their lives and belonging to others that they aspire to be sentenced to a real prison,
To afford them liberty from their current psychological chains (which bind their minds and restrict their freedom of thought and actions)
And perhaps afford them boundaries in their lives, and perhaps deterrents to self-harm and abuse.
“You have to have a dream to make a dream come true”!
What, then, do I aspire to dream about?
I’m not altogether sure other than to wake one day,
And find I have escaped from my current rut, and all life’s woes and worries have permanently gone away!
