You've finally decided to end your four month relationship with this guy; you realize that this has been four long boring months with him and you don't want to end up making it to five months with this guy. He annoys you and you are not all that attracted to him. You don't want to call him up or face him in fear he will beg you not to break up with him, so you decided to send him a dear John letter; the only problem is you've never written one and you don't know the first thing about doing it. Well here are some tips and pointers for you before you boot up that computer to send this dear John email or run to the post office with some snail mail.
When breaking up with someone, you should consider their feelings. They will be hurt and have their ego's shattered so it will be a delicate process but it can be successful as long as you be tactful and respectable. If his name is Chuck, You can first start by saying dear Chuck, not Dear John unless his name is really John. Wouldn't that be convenient for you?
Tell him how much you appreciated the time you've spent with him, but that you no longer have that time to spend with him anymore. Be honest if you have someone else in mind to date. Let Chuck know that you are planning on going out on a date with Brad. Chuck will realize he's being dumped and thrown over for this guy Brad. However, in your letter explaining to Chuck that you feel that you and Brad have more in common and you'd like to move on and date Brad.
Chuck should know that you are sorry for the breakup and telling him that you are sorry that things did not work out and it is not his fault is good to put into the letter. You can offer you friendship by letting him know that you will always be there as a friend. If this dear John letter is because he has cheated on you, abused you are hurt you in any other way, it is best to point out the reason why you don't want to be involved with him anymore.
Dear John letters are hard to write, but given a lot of thought before you write one has to be number one priority and asking a friend or relative to proof read it for you before you send it is a good idea. Sometimes it's also good not to send your dear John letter right a way in case you have second thoughts.
Whatever you decide to do I hope things goes well for you in the end.
