Best vegetable side dishes for Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, you already have your mind set that you’ll be serving turkey and now all you need to do is try and figure out what side dishes you will make to serve with that turkey. There are so many to choose from. Perhaps a couple of the following dishes would compliment your dinner nicely.

Mashed potatoes are always a favorite especially amongst the children. This year put a little twist on them by using evaporated milk in place of your regular milk. The evaporated milk will give them a little richer taste. Also, add a tablespoon or two of sour cream. You’ll still be serving mashed potatoes, but now they’ll taste a little more flavorful.

If you’d rather serve a Potato Salad that would be great too, use the new potatoes, you won’t have to peel them. Simply cut them up and boil them. Add a few cut up boiled eggs, pickle relish, chopped onions and salt and pepper to your potatoes and your ready to add your mayonnaise and mustard, mix it all up and your ready to add your dish to the table.

Yams and sweet potatoes are also a Thanksgiving favorite. You can also add a little kick to them by sprinkling them with a little brown sugar and placing some pats of butter on them here and there. When there almost done, sprinkle them with miniature marshmallows and pecans and bake them just a few minutes longer until the marshmallows begin to turn golden. Another option for your yams is to sprinkle them with crushed corn flakes before adding the marshmallows. These are sure to please every appetite.

Broccoli cheese and rice would also be a great choice for a side dish at your Thanksgiving dinner. Or you may choose to have rice dressing or dirty rice as southerners call it, which is simply cooked rice, browned ground meat with onions, bell peppers and green onions in it. For the bean lovers you may choose to put a bag of beans on the night before in your crock pot. A good choice for this would be red beans with a roll of breakfast sausage crumbled up in it and a can of Ro-tel tomatoes added. You can also add cut up onions and bell peppers and just let them cook over night. They’ll be done the next morning and more than ready to serve with your dinner.

You may choose to serve a home made chicken pot pie or a shepherd’s pie as a side dish, either would be a great choice. You could do something as simple as mixing a couple of cans of cream style corn with a couple cans of whole kernel corn and adding a little salt and pepper. You may choose to serve baked beans just as you would if you were having a bar-b-q or even corn on the cob.

There is no right or wrong side dish to serve at your Thanksgiving Dinner, the choice is all yours.
