The days of going to the grocery store and buying anything and everything desired are gone for many shoppers. Choices must be made and luxury items are often no longer on the list. How does one reduce the cost of food? A few simple steps can save the average shopper thousands of dollars per year.
Store loyalty cards
If a store offers a loyalty card sign up for one and use it. Review the weekly ad for items that are on sale, especially buy one get one free deals as these are the equivalent of getting a fifty percent discount. Be careful to stick to the list of sale items as other products may not be a bargain. Stockpile frequently used non-perishable items when there is a sale.
Coupons
Coupons can be combined with other discounts and in some cases are doubled by certain stores. Use coupons whenever possible, just do not be fooled into purchasing items that are not normally used just because it is a good deal. Wasted food is a total loss no matter how good the price.
Buy in bulk
Large warehouse clubs sometimes offer fantastic deals items purchased in large quantity. Calculate the cost per unit prior to purchase and compare the cost to smaller quantities. Be careful of large bulk containers of perishable items as they may spoil after being opened if not used up all at once.
Join a co-op
Search the internet for nearby co-ops. Some of them are quite good and save members a lot of money by making bulk purchases. In some cases one is required to volunteer time at the co-op in exchange for membership.
Shop at flea and farmers' markets
Some of the best deals on food are available at flea and farmers markets. Buying directly from the farmer saves both packaging and transportation costs as items are brought directly from the farm to the market and are usually loose in bulk bins rather than packaged for retail. Those who like to preserve and can food can buy produce by the bushel. Flea markets offer cheap food, just pay close attention to expiration dates and open containers.
Read the ingredients
Store brand products are often available at a lower cost than major brands and are often manufactured by at the same facility just labeled differently. Compare ingredients and try store brands when the savings is substantial. If family members are convinced that the brand name is the only way to go try filling the brand name container with the store brand. This works especially well for cereal as the packaging is typically the only difference that makes certain brands much more expensive.
Make a plan and stick to it
The best way to save money on food is to plan shopping trips carefully. Make a list and do not stray from it. Try to shop when not hungry and leave children at home as they are often the culprits who throw extra things in the cart.
