There are quite a few causes of itchy ears in dogs. First of all, if your dog is constantly shaking its head or itching its ears, he or she could have an infection. If the dog only does it occasionally, it should not be a problem, but if the dog constantly itches his or her ears, then you would have to consult with a vet and get some antibiotics to treat the infection.
Another cause of itchy ears in dogs is allergies. Many dogs, just like people, are allergic to certain things and one of the symptoms could be itchy ears. Dogs can have many allergies and you have to get them tested to see what they are allergic to. There is also dog medicine for allergies. You have to do what you can to relieve some of the allergies your dogs may have. You need to keep your house free and clear from dust and dirt, and anything else that may cause the dog discomfort.
One cause of itchy ears in dogs could be a bacterial or ear infection. There is also medicine you can get to treat these conditions. Again, if the problem persists, you can take your dog to the vet to find out what else you can do to treat the problem.
Dry skin can definitely cause itchy ears in dogs. They tend to keep on scratching their ears and it becomes annoying to them. A lot of dogs, depending on the breed, have ear infections and you need to clean their ears out pretty regularly. Labs have a lot of problems with their ears and generally need their ears cleaned every couple of days.
Fleas can cause itchy ears in dogs. You need to give your dog a flea treatment once a month to keep the fleas away. Fleas can cause several problems with dogs and cats and cause them to itch a lot. Try and keep your dog clean and give them the proper treatments that they require when recommended.
There are several over the counter medicines that can help with some of the problems related to itchy ears for dogs. Benadryl can be used to treat allergies with dogs, but always check with the vet to make sure you are giving the dog the right medicine to treat the problem. Trying to identify the cause and mistreating it could cause further problems.
