Penn state did not do nearly enough in the light of the Jerry Sandusky scandal that shocked America over the past few weeks. While many were disappointed by Sandusky's actions, the true repulsiveness of this story is the way Penn State responded to this incident. It seems clear that Joe Paterno and many other members of the Penn State football organization were more than willing to turn a blind eye or not invigilate properly out of concern for preserving the reputation of the university's football program. It is shocking that the lives of so many children who were damaged by Jerry Sandusky were compromised simply because the Penn State administration wanted to protect one of their "own", even if he is a narcissist and pedophile who has engaged in despicable acts against children.

The fact that Sandusky was allowed to post bail is also ridiculous, when you consider that even Dr. Conrad Murray was not required to post bail. It was later discovered that the judge who allowed Sandusky to post bail was actually a former volunteer for his charity, raising even more suspicions of potential corruption in this quiet, seemingly backwards college town. The Second Mile charity was the method that Jerry Sandusky used to gain access to so many young boys, with whom he engaged in  classic anti-social and inappropriate behaviors including showering with young boys, taking them out of class, grooming them and buying them gifts. This form of manipulation to young children incapable of defending themselves highlights human nature at its very worst and should serve as a reminder to parents everywhere to watch their kids extremely closely and get a good understanding of the people that are watching them. If parents were more careful with their children, it is possible that many of these cases could have been avoided.

When the American public was first shocked by the news about the Penn State allegations of sexual misconduct, there was considerable outrage. People began to appreciate that universities across the United States are plagued with corruption and this is a situation that needs to stop. Jerry Sandusky, the suspect in this case, currently earns a pension of over fifty thousand dollars, even while using the Penn State facilities for sexually reprehensible acts. This will hopefully be an eye-opener for football fans and people everywhere to raise their voices and try to end corruption forever.
