Tips for raising successful children

I hope these tips help first-time mothers and experienced parents alike:

1. Always wait out a tantrum. NEVER result to violence.
2. Simple items, like empty boxes and old-fashioned brooms, are a great way to engage your child's imagination. They can be whoever or whatever the want!
3. Your child creating an imaginary friend is normal, it can be a supportive tool in early childhood and can help them gain self confidence and security.
4. When your child is a little older than 3, start taking them to regular dentist appointments.
5. When your child has a tantrum, don't abandon them, yell at them, smack them or hold a grudge when the tantrum ends.
6. Your child must be able to sit and walk before beginning toilet training.
7. Toys with handles that can be pulled or pushed around the floor (especially wagons) are essential for your child.
8. Don't over-correct your child while they are speaking, because this can make them self-conscious and frustrated. SMILE AND NOD!
9. Gates blocking off dangerous stairwells and doorways may upset your child, as it prevents them from expressing their curiousity, but it is necessary in protecting them from nasty accidents.
10. Naps keep your child happy and content during the day, but don't let them nap too close to bedtime, or they'll be up all night.
11. Even if your child gets something wrong, guide them along and persist until they learn to do it correctly.
12. Between the ages of 3 and 5, start letting your child dress themselves. It may take forever, but practice makes perfect!
13. Your child may be afraid of the dark, and this is very common and perfectly normal. A soft nightlight will help this, but don't forget to "ween" them off of it when you think they've overcome the fear.
14. Use actions AND words to get your point across to your child, this makes it easier for them to concentrate and understand.
15. Always fence off pool and pond areas, and make sure your child attends proper swimming lessons with a trained professional.
