My favourite songs by the Beatles are emotive to me for various reasons. As well as making me feel good some conjure up happy memories also.
The first memory of a Beatles song that I have is when I was on holiday with my parents. I was then an only child of about six and it was my first holiday staying at a hotel in Wales. The song was All you need is love which even now makes me happy and transports me back in time. I was sitting waiting for my lunch to be served when this song came on in the restaurant and I must have looked like I really enjoyed listening to it because I remember my dad saying rather unamused " You don't like that do you?" He looked disappointed and my mother looked awkward but I remember nodding and saying yes and then feeling like I had really let them down for some reason that I was unsure of. However, I remember this song with a degree of amusement all the same, and still really like the song! Sorry dad and mum!
Penny Lane is my all time favourite for no reason other than I just love everything about the piece. As I also live near Penny Lane I can only say that this just makes the song even more special. The simple yet effective lyrics are brought to life by the Liverpool accent which clearly comes through.
Yellow submarine is just a wacky catchy song which I can't help but like and makes me smile whenever I hear it! Although I said that Penny Lane is my all time favourite I rate Ob-La-Di-,Ob-La-Da on par with it. This to me is just such a happy full of life song that brings a smile to my face.
Michelle is a lovely ballad that reminds me of school and the fact that there was a girl called Michelle in my class. I remember thinking what a lovely song to have your name in!
Lady Madonna, Yesterday, Hey Jude, Help, are all great songs too that seem timeless and I never get fed up hearing them.
Eleanor Rigby is just such a fantastic story, so sad and it draws you into the song so that you feel the emotion and loneliness that goes with it.
So there are some of my favourite Beatles songs......Ahhh !
