Short stories: The engagement ring

The Cruel Engagement.

Jeff and Kerrie had been together for five years.

“It’s about time Jeff popped the question,” said Kerrie to her best friend, Sally.

“You will just have to throw a couple of hints to him”.

After lunch with Sally, which they did every Wednesday for as long as Kerrie could remember, Kerrie went for a drive. What Sally had said was on her mind. She needed ideas so she could hint to Jeff. Although Kerrie was certain Jeff had an idea. It was all Kerrie talked about for the last couple of months.

When Kerrie arrived home, she found Jeff packing a suitcase.

“Are you leaving me darling? I know breakfast was a disaster but I do try. Hahaha,” joked Kerrie.

“I have another business trip”, Jeff answered, very sadly. “I’m so sorry, but I will be away for your birthday”.

“It’s ok. You can make up for it with a special present.”

Kerrie started waving her left hand in the air.

“Something gold and sparkly for my fourth finger,” she sang.

Jeff started laughing. He pulled Kerrie towards him and they fell on the bed and made love.

As Jeff was leaving for his business trip, he turned to Kerrie.

“I have done something very special for you. Your mother is in on it. But you have to wait until you actual birth day”. He pointed his finger at her.

“And that’s an order”.

With a wink of the eye and a peck on the lips, Jeff was gone.

Kerrie waited a couple of minutes after Jeff left. She started to dial her mothers number on her mobile.

“No”, she said. “I will be patient. It’s not that long till my birthday”.

On the day of Kerrie’s birthday, her mother, at seven thirty in the morning, was knocking on Kerrie’s door.

“Here, here! Open it! Open it!”

Kerrie and her mother sat opposite each other on the living room floor.

Kerrie’s mother handed her a medium sized, lilac coloured box. On the box was a huge purple bow.

Kerrie untied the bow, very carefully, folded it up and placed it beside her. With a small, quick glance at her mother, she started to open the box. Inside the box was a smaller, turquoise coloured box, surrounded by yellow tissue paper, which smelled of Jeff’s favourite aftershave.

Kerrie carefully picked up the box. After turning it over in her hands a couple of times, she placed it beside her. She started to take out the tissue paper, bit by bit.
