Why there are no more great American statesmen

by Bob Schmidt

Created on: November 08, 2011

As the world becomes more complicated and the need for leadership increases, the search for the next great American statesman yields few results. It brings to mind the question, “Why has no one since Ronald Reagan surfaced to champion the interests of freedom and the American dream?” While the answer to this question is complex, there is a logical explanation.

The manner in which a statesman might be identified has changed drastically in the past half century. As the technological revolution has changed the landscape of media exposure, potential great leaders have been fatally exposed to excessive publicity that often represents media bias and political assassination. Sadly, America lacks inspirational leadership due to the changing world, and declining ethical values that are part and parcel of the “American dream.”

Qualities of a Statesman

Among the qualities of a statesman, intellect is an obvious component. Another component of being a statesman would be the ability to speak, and communicate with the public. Added to intellect and oratory skills, a statesman should have principled vision to lead America to greater purpose. A great statesman should be something more than a partisan politician, and should represent the interests of the entire country.

A true statesman must stand upon principles, even at the risk of opposing partisan political cronies. All leaders have their own political preferences, and difficult decisions must sometimes be made that might anger some members of ones’ constituency. Ultimately, great leaders or statesmen must be highly principled and capable of making difficult choices without regard to their own political convenience.

Fatal Flaws to Statesman Status

Historically, many past American leaders of great stature have had personal flaws. Some of the most highly praised statesmen from past generations are known to have been quite imperfect in one way or another. Some were heavy drinkers, while others were known to have had active sexual lives outside their marriages. What might have been acceptable behavior a century ago might be a fatal flaw now.

This is not to say that principles and ethical behavior have no place today. It is highly important to recognize that an individual qualified to be an outstanding leader and a true statesman is also likely to have some negative characteristics or traits. Inspirational leadership is sometimes the product of overcoming obstacles caused by human weaknesses.

Belief in America

There can be no American statesman who does not believe in the founding principles of the United States of America. Freedom, and justice for all must exist at the core of their being. A true statesman should defend America’s system of government. Failure to do so defiles the memories of each American who has sacrificed to preserve their country.

The next great American statesman exists. Whether or not he or she is recognized by the American citizenry is the real question. Instead of complaining and arguing personal interests, it is high time to support those who have vision, intellect, and the ability to lead America into the future.
