With Christmas coming up rapidly and most people having a shortage of money now is the time to come up with idea's that children can join in to make presents for aunties without breaking the bank. When i was younger we used to make tea cosies and egg cosies, these are simply two squares of plain knitting stitched together with will that fit over a tea-pot or a boiled egg to keep them warm before drinking or eating.
Knitting is a good pastime that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike and finding a simple knitting design for a child to try will help to develop the child's interest in the art of knitting, which in the future will be a good thing for a child to learn, as once they have advanced in the art of knitting from trying simple designs, they can then go on to making tops and jumpers for themselves and their own children when they grow up, knitting not only saves money it teaches patience and calmness as well as giving you a sense of achievement when you produce the item you have been working on .
Casting on twenty stitch's and kitting a small square will be enough for covering a boiled egg, whist around thirty five stitches casted onto the needles and knit will cover an average sized tea pot. Knitting squares for blankets can be any size of casting on and knitting, it just depends on how quickly you want the blankets finished. The bigger the squares the less time it will take to finish.
As well as this being a simple knitting idea it also gives the child a sense of achievement in making something themselves by hand and presenting it as a present or gift for birthdays or Christmas. The more adventurous knitter can then go on to making scarves, cushion covers and little squares that can be stitched together to make a blanket, as these are all done in plain knitting and not knit a stitch purl a stitch the kitting grows quickly and the child doesn't get bored and give up half way through.
Many colours can be used from a plain colour to a stripy pattern and lots of different coloured squares can be used to make a colourful blanket, which more than one child can take part in making together as a project. Once a child has become used to knitting squares and sewing them together to make the simple items, then more advanced things can be tackled.
Knitting is an art well worth learning and with simple designs to start off with bigger and better things can be achieved.
