Reflections: The evil of lukewarm Christianity

by Ed Ostrom

Created on: November 07, 2011

Twelve Step Group literature declares “half measures will not do!” This is a truism that applies not only to the field of addiction but to every day life. It is a true reality in the life of all Christ followers. If we desire to be successful as Christ followers we must full heartily follow the Lord. There can be no half hearted service. Half measures will not do.

This message that half measures will not do needs to be sounded loud and long among Christians today. In this day and age where so much is mediocre, and a liaise faire attitude of “any thing will do” is so rampant; Christians are in danger of falling into the evil practice of lukewarm Christianity.

The practice of lukewarm Christianity is very evil and is condemned by the Living Lord in the Church of Laoedicea in Revelation 3 15- 19. “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot; I could wish you were cold of hot so then because you are lukewarm and neither cold or hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. Because you say I am rich, have become wealthy and have need of nothing and do not know that you are wretched, poor, blind and naked I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire that you may be rich; and whit garments that you may be clothed, that the same of your nakedness may not be revealed  and anoint your eyes with eye salve that you may see.”

The Lord plainly states that if we allow our daily Christ following to become lukewarm the Lord Jesus is so upset that He will forcedly   vomit us out of His mouth,. A lukewarm follower so upsets the Lord Jesus that He becomes physically sick over it.

In 2 Timothy 3 The Apostle Paul under the influence of the Holy Spirit boldly tells us what the world will be like in the last days.  It is not a beautiful portrait. It is rather ugly, rough edged, and offensive.  Paul talks about “perilous times coming.”  He mentions men being lovers of themselves, proud and boastful, disobedient to parents, unthankful and unholy people.  They will be unloving and unforgiving. They will brutally despise all goodness on the earth (including the goodness of God.). They will be heady, proud and boastful. Their mantra will be “Glory unto man!”

In verses 4 and 5 the Holy Spirit directs the pen of Paul to write two of the most distasteful statements in all the Bible “Lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God!” and “having
