Most people don't get what they need out of their gym membership because they lack motivation to exercise. There are are three things you can do to keep you motivated. The best three things that you can do is to either take a class, hire a personal trainer or bring a friend with you.
If you have a lean budget then the two latter options may be the only ones. Most gyms will charge you somewhere in the realm of $40 per session but the exact rates can vary from gym to gym, depending on how long you want the sessions to be and what you want to do when working out. Their is also a specific time you can count on every week to get your workout. Other people will be in the class trying to accomplish the same goals and probably enjoys the same type of activities as you do. After all, that hefty gym membership fee is at least a part of what you are paying for.
Hire a personal trainer
If you simply lack the motivation this may be the best option if it's not going to bust your budget. While hiring a personal trainer is a viable option to helping yourself get fit it can be very taxing on financially. If your going to choose this approach you need to get to know what type exercising your personal trainer likes to emphasize, what that person's particular experience is and if possible try to get references. If you have any friends who have had the same trainer you can ask them. If you simply
