Being far away from home doesn't mean that you can't take a piece of home with you. Whether you are traveling, on business or at school, it never hurts to take some little reminders with you. Take a small something with you that reminds you of something loved from home. It can be anything from a shirt that have the personal scent of your best friend, lover, or home to a photograph of your beloved pet. One of the most important things to combat homesickness is to remind yourself that just because you're away doesn't mean there is an impassable wall between you and those that you love. Having a personal item will remind you that you have someone who is waiting for you, who misses and who loves you and who can't wait to see you again. Having this item helps you keep in contact with home and further helps you remember that that loved one would want you to be having a good time.
By having a good time while you're away from home means that when you return you will have wonderful stories to tell! Getting out and making the most of your experience will make you and your loved ones more comfortable with the situation. You will be having fun and when you come home, those who you share your experiences with will feel better knowing that you had a good time. Furthermore, you never know when the experiences you have away from home may come in handy when confronted with situations at home. Good experiences give you as much advice as bad ones. For example, if on vacation you find some fun, easy activity that can be done anywhere, you can entertain yourself and friends by recreating it at home.
Keep an eye on your goal. There is a reason that you are away from home: you are taking a break, or getting an education, going to a conference, or any number of other reasons. When you feel the pangs of homesickness, remind yourself why you're there in the first place and what you had intended to get out of it. Once you've established what you want, you can go out and make the most of your experience.
Finally, as the world moves towards a more global community, chances are, no matter where you are you will have access to a phone or a computer. If things really begin to feel terrible, hearing a familiar voice or reading the words of a loved one will feel comforting and remind you that even if you're alone physically, you will always have loved ones with you. If you don't have access to a phone or a computer, carrying a recorded message of your best friend telling you how she hope's your having a great time, or the sound of your dog barking excitedly when you walk through the door, gives you access to home any time you want.
