Premiering on HBO in March of 2004, Deadwood has since received critical acclaim for its originality, returning to the beloved Western-centered dramas which have been wildly popular in America since its foundation in an era of predominantly reality-based TV.
The series is set in the 1870s in Deadwood, a town known for its convenient location in respect to the gold-saturated Black Hills of the Dakota Territory. The theme of Western Capitalism is not lost as the plot focuses on the creation and maintenance of communities and the opinions and ideologies of the pioneering characters, most of who are based on real historical figures.
Although it received a considerable amount of acclaim while it was on the air, the third season wrapped in August of 2006, and has yet to return to HBO. The series writer and creator, David Milch, has reportedly agreed to produce two two-hour long films to tie up loose ends for the remaining fans.
Although the concept is commendable, the series consistently fails to adhere to historical fact, taking severe liberties with the characters and events. In addition, an immense amount of profanity peppers the dialogue, creating the feel that the events are taking place in Tony Soprano's basement rather than in the deserted West.
