Arguments against the Electoral College in US politics

After the last 2 presidential elections, does anyone actually believe we can get a true elected-by-the-people president in 2008?

First of all, I have a lot of trouble with the way the last 2 elections went down and the fact that the Dems didn't vociferously challenge them. How does Florida, on the east coast, with their polling places closed for hours, become the last state to declare its vote and become the deciding factor in 2 elections? Somebody PLEASE explain that one to me! Plus, what about all the reported election/voter fraud, all the votes thrown out, the voter intimidation in pro-Dem voting areas? Why wasn't any of this used for a re-vote in the state? There was clearly more than enough evidence. Plus, the court system decided the election winner?

Second, does anyone think in this age of computers and hackers that voting machine results weren't tampered with? (Do you really believe people elected Bush twice?) Why do certain people object to a system where receipts are printed so each person, and the state, can have a written proof of who they voted for? It would be easy to set up such a system.

Finally, isn't it time to go to a one vote per person system and throw out this antiquated electoral college? This is not a democracy! The coastal and more urban areas, where there are a lot more people concentrated, are not receiving fair representation in the presidential election. The more rural and less populated states' legislators and representatives can look after their interests back in Washington.

It's time to throw out the current election system and give this country a chance to belong to the people!
