I do a lot of travel in UK by public transport, and I find that for what I call 'joined up travel', www.planajourney.co.uk can supply a very comprehensive solution. The means of travel can be train, plane, ferry, and tube, and the trips are fully integrated i.e. one trip to this site saves you going in and out of many sites, writing things on scraps of paper and trying to work out whether you can get from the tube - to the train station - to the airport - in time to check in, and make the flight.
Also the site is totally operator independent and will by default find you the quickest route. It is up to you to select which operator you want to use.
For those who are traveling light, i.e. not lugging a suitcase full of laptops, modems and cards about with them, details can be be held on both Palm, and Pocket PC and the latest offering for those using Blackberry devices, is that the site is browsable by them.
The various products are inexpensive and if you don't need to plan too far in advance, and have access to a PC, then all you need is access to the web to get your information for free, as the program runs a couple of weeks in advance without any form of subscription needed - and a very unusual bonus nowadays - you can access the freebies without any registration process whatsoever.
Journeys can be printed out, and for the really paranoid, an SMS service is available at a small cost. I have found it to be very accurate, and the search process is incredibly fast - but don't take my word for it - try it yourself.
