Christian views on alcohol and drug addiction

To begin with over and over again the Bible talks about the "drunkard" and warns against being overly drunk.
Anything that inhibits our ability to live up to our full potential as a person, be it alcohol, drugs, or anything else, is surely not what God wants or intends for us.
Have you ever seen people who are really drunk?
Unable to walk straight, breathing all over in your face, hanging on you so you can barely keep yourself standing up- usually they think they are funny, either singing or laughing, or it could go the other way and they could be crying hysterically over pretty much nothing. They have difficulty communicating, slur their speech, and generally don't comprehend anything that's being said to them.

I can't imagine that this is God's will for any of us.
Have you ever loved someone who just kept throwing their life down the garbage disposal, because of an inability to quit using drugs or alcohol?
Do you realize what that does to the family, and friends of the addict?
To not know if the person you love will get home safely tonight, to watch them go from intellegent, passionate, motivated, to careless, uncaring... empty...
God isn't mean, or harsh. He's not trying to "keep the kids from having any fun." God is love. It hurts to watch someone you love destroy themselves through substance abuse.
Anything that robs a person of their life the way alcohol and drugs do, is not what God wants for you- or for any of His children.
