Mesothelioma, lawyers, class action lawsuits.
In a perfect world, no one would get sick and die from disease. However, today, under the law, people are able to receive recompensation from the dangers that they have encountered while working.
While working as an administrative assistant for a service of a legal nature, I can tell you that mesothelioma is a hot topic amoung lawyers these days. Mesolthelioma is the highest-paying adsense keyword currently, and there are a few large lawsuits going around. Plaintiffs are vying for structured settlements of varying amounts, all due to damages caused by exposure to asbestos.
What I want to know is the human cost of such a cottage industry.
Mesothelioma (aka asbestos cancer) is caused by exposure to asbestos; the main symptoms do not appear for twenty years or more. People most likely exposed to asbestos would be those working in construction and cement processing.
There are plenty of internet resources available for mesothelioma, including hundred of lawyers. Most mesothelioma lawyers will work on a contingency basis: they only get paid if a settlement comes in, and their fees are directly removed from the settlement. Everyone and anyone can afford a contingency lawyer.
Actual cases of mesothelioma are in the likelyhood of four to seven people per million in Western nations. Comparatively, lung cancer occurs in one thousand people per million. Some famous people have died from mesothelioma, or complications, therein: Steve Mcqueen, Paul Gleason, Warren Zevon, and Stephen J. Gould.
In America, in 1999, two-thousand four-hundred and eight five deaths were recorded due to some form of mesothelioma.

I wonder, after reading this information, how much is gained by settlements? Do we really care more about the disease? Are we doing anything to help prevent it?
Personally, I'd much rather have a healthy mind and body than be rich.
