Columbus Day represents the early beginnings of our country. Few events can hold that stature and honor. The discovery our what would become the United States of America established hope for others in foreign countries to come and start a new life. Few events can hold such presence and there will probably be few events in the future which will have the same impact.
There should be no question that we should continue to honor Columbus Day. This day also represents the courage of men sailing in unknown waters to a place few believe existed. Taking this kind of risk was not easy during those times and there were some difficulties in obtaining the finances to accomplish such a trip according to what history has taught us. The courage of the men who manned the three ships which landed on our shores exhibited a spirit which was energized in what this country would become. Individuals from many countries, ethnic backgrounds and religious beliefs would form a country that is unique in the world today.
Unlike other countries we are comprised of numerous nationalities and as a result we are a diverse nation. The rights we have today as documented in our Constitution were born out of the free will of those who came to settle the new land. Granted there were hardships during those times but the will of the new settlers would not be denied. This is why they fought England for the right to be free and to have the type of government they felt should exist in a new land.
Honoring Columbus Day also exhibits the spirit upon which this country was found. Spirit is a great thing and can be put to great use if used wisely. This day means different things to different individuals. It is a day established to honor and recognize the individual and the men who sailed with him to bring hope to many people in finding new land to explore and start a new life. Columbus Day is as much a part of our history as any event which has taken place since the land we call home was discovered. If we as a country stopped recognizing this day what would be next. Losing the event which this day is meant to recognize would be a mistake. It is history and history needs to be remembered. Throughout our history we have had several events and from them we have learned much. Columbus Day is no different.
To some Columbus Day is just another day. They go to work and do what they do every day but others take time to celebrate what this day is about. True businesses have sales just like any other holiday but they should also celebrate the purpose of this day. Sales are a great thing around holidays but there should be more focus than there is about what this day represents both in the event and the importance of what took place.
