Business owners of all types are motivated by different rewards. Some are motivated by money, some by recognition and others by respect from their peers. There are numerous rewards associated with owning your own business and some of them are tangible while others are intangible. Here are some potential rewards:
Peer recognition
Whether you are an introvert or an extrovert, being recognized by peers is a side reward of owning a business. Becoming an expert in a given field and gaining recognition as an expert often results in business owners gaining a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction in their work. This often translates into increased self-confidence which may translate into greater success.
Sense of accomplishment
Many business owners seeks success for an internal sense of accomplishment. This is perhaps one of the most rewarding aspects of owning your own business. Watching a business develop from an idea to a full blown thriving entity is very exciting. Few things in life provide the sense of accomplishment that accompanies success.
Filling needs
Each business fulfills a need regardless of what type of service or product is provided. Whether the needs are for an entire community or a segment of the community, there is often a sense of satisfaction in being able to address needs of customers. This reward is one that while intangible, may be vital for someone who owns a business. One may need to feel that they are filling the needs of others in order to feel that they have succeeded.
Financial rewards
The financial rewards associated with business ownership are numerous. In some cases, the financial rewards translate into larger homes, faster cars or the ability to contribute to a favorite charity. These financial rewards are for many the most rewarding aspects of business ownership.
Pay it forward
Many business owners find great rewards by paying it forward. This includes mentoring other business owners, participating in “show and tell” in schools and tutoring when possible. Many business owners find a great sense of satisfaction from these tasks and often they find that they have more to offer than they ever imagined.
Every business owner has a different idea about the rewards of business ownership. Most people do not start their own business with specific rewards in mind, most of them come well after the business is started. Determining the most rewarding part of owning your own business will lie with the entrepreneur. In some cases, the rewards of business ownership may be different for men than it is for women, in fact, they are likely different for every business owner.
