No one can escape the passing of time. Time will go by whether we want it to or not. It will never be the same day, month, and year again, and as we get older time seems to go by even faster that we remember it did as children. It dictates to our lives, sets boundaries on when we can do things, and is a preoccupation of all of us from the moment we get up to the moment we set our heads on our pillows.
There are many cliques about time that are passed down from generation to generation. "Time heals all wounds," "time waits for no man," "time is precious," and so on. We learned to tell time at a young age, and we hit a milestone when we were able to correctly enunciate the time of day by looking at the clock. My generation, and the generations before me learned to tell time on a clock with a face, and hands. Today children will look at a digital clock that tells them exactly what time of it is. Whatever it may be we are all tethered to a clock of some sort throughout our waking lives.
As a youngster I remember thinking two weeks away seemed like an eternity. Those fourteen days seem to go by slowly. Now I see how much we rush our seasons, holidays, work weeks, and ultimately our lives. The stores prepare for Halloween towards the end of summer, and the Christmas season kicks off before Halloween is even over. We tend to rush everything, maybe because we need to feel in control of the time passing by, and plan our lives around the future instead of the present.
Looking back at my childhood, and youth I will say I don't know where the time went as many of you will agree. How can I be as old as I am and how did time sneak up on me as fast as it did? The same goes as I watched my children grow from babies to young women. The world will continue spinning around, and with each spin time passes by. We can not stop the clock unless we are playing certain sports, then it is acceptable. Many of us will rise when the sun comes up, and sleep well after the sun sets. It is part of how we function, and gives us perimeters in the day to do the things we need to do in the time frame allotted.
The concept of time passing makes us aware of the finality of life itself. We are born, grow, develop, mature, and stabilize for awhile until time catches up to us and our bodies, and minds start feeling the effects of time. We don't get younger. We age, as each day is herald in for the dawn of a new beginning we will add more time to our existence. Time has always been part of life, and will continue to be long after we are gone. From generation to generation time will be the great dictator of life itself.
We can say there is never enough time, and sometimes that may be the case. Twenty four hours in a day may not be enough for some people, although that is the standard we all follow as we set our clocks and plan accordingly. What would we do without the concept of time? How would we accomplish everything without deadlines, terms, semesters, years, months, weeks, days, hours and minutes? It can be scary knowing we have no control over the passing of time, but, we can make the most out of the time we have, and set out to do what we want with a little help from "Father Time" himself.
