Five secrets to longevity in business

The five secrets to longevity in business are:

 1. Knowing that Communication is Key:

There are so many things that can go wrong when you do not communicate well in business.  Volumes can be written about how the use of incorrect word offended someone or caused a misunderstanding that led to a mistake or loss of revenue.  We are all guilty of hitting “send” on an email too quickly or accidentally replying to everyone and/or sending a comment that was not intended for everyone to see.  I am a true believer of the telephone call when face to face communication is not available although I may confirm what was discussed through a follow-up email.  When speaking to someone, there are be facial expressions, inflections of voice or body language that give us clues to understanding – none of these come through an email, not even by using all capital.  Although we seem more connected through social media, we are often missing the heart to heart dialog that ensures understanding in a business arrangement.

 2. Believing that Client Care Matters Most:

Everyone has heard the saying that the customer is always right, but this saying usually refers to the customer who is already dissatisfied.  I think we are missing the point if we have to wait for a customer to complain to understand his or her needs and this goes back to communication.  Ask yourself what options do you have available for your customers to express their views.  If you notice, the internet has a powerful voice when it comes to satisfied or dissatisfied customers.  Restaurants are rated on line and people are using social media sites to either rant or rave about their experience.  You must be proactive and not reactive in this area and make sure that your customers know you care about what they think.  Spend the time to conduct a customer satisfaction survey every year or hold a contest for the best suggestion from your customers so that there is a positive and safe way for your customers to express themselves.

 3. Making Informed Choices by Doing Research First

Businesses who have longevity already know how essential this secret is.  In making business decisions from purchases to personnel, do your research.  When purchasing office equipment, research several brands and make sure you know the pros and cons of each.  When hiring, take the time to call references and check social media accounts.  When
