Bringing home a new puppy is as exciting to some people as bringing home a new baby. Just like when you bring home a new baby, you will realize there are a lot of supplies you need that you have either forgotten, or didn’t think about. New puppies need a lot of attention, so be sure you have the time and proper things to handle the new addition to your family.
Basic Supplies for a New Puppy
1. The right puppy food: Puppies come in all different sizes. A Yorkie puppy, for instance, is a lot smaller then a Rottweiler puppy. The size of the kibble should be matched to the size of the puppy. Most dog food bags will tell you what size of dog it is recommended for. It is also essential to feed the new puppy the best quality of food you can afford. If you are a new pet owner, consult a friend or a veterinarian to determine the quality of the different food types.
2. A snuggly secure bed: A warm cozy place for the new puppy to sleep is essential. If the puppy has just been taken from his mother and litter mates he will miss the warmth and companionship. Purchase a soft dog bed that has higher sides surrounding it so that the puppy feels secure. It is also advisable to bunch up a small fleece type blanket in the bed for the puppy to snuggle in.
3. Proper feeding dishes: The puppy will need the appropriate size feeding dishes. If the puppy is a type of breed that has the “smashed” face, like a Shih Tzu, make sure the dish is shallow enough so that he or he can reach into the bowl to eat or drink. Larger dogs, of course, will need to be feed from a bigger deeper dish. Always feed the puppy from the same dish so she will recognize them.
4. Stuffed animals: The puppy will be lonely at first, so having a stuffed animal to sleep with may ease his anxiety. Be sure to check the stuffed animal for parts that could easily be chewed off and swallowed. Remember that the stuffed animal will probably become the puppy’s best friend so make sure it will be durable and safe.
Essentials You May Not Think about for Puppy
1. Breed specific book: Different breeds of dogs have different temperaments and personalities. Consulting a book pertaining to your specific puppies breed can be essential in their care and training.
2. Grooming supplies: You may think it is too soon to introduce grooming supplies, but the sooner you do it, the easier it will be for the puppy and the future groomer. Introduce the puppy to a brush as soon as possible so he becomes used to it.
3. Clothes basket or playpen: There will be times that you are not able to keep a close eye on the puppy, yet want him in the room with you for socialization. It’s not good to totally confine her to a kennel while you are home, but a large clothes basket will keep the puppy safe and allow her to be near you as you work. If the puppy is too big for a clothes basket a playpen works great. Place the puppy’s fuzzy blanket in the clothes basket or playpen so they recognize the scent.
There are endless other items you will find to be essential as the new puppy settles into your household. This list will get you started and make the new puppy feel secure in your home. They will also help you adjust to having a new family member a little easier.
