Emotional intelligence(EI) is defined as Intelligence regarding the emotions, especially in the ability to monitor one's own or others' emotions.
Emotional intelligence is a relatively new term yet to be fully defined. Some consider it as a cognitive ability similar to IQ and others consider it as a combination of abilities and traits.

The important components in EI include:

1.Ability to express emotions
2.Independence
3.Selfesteem
4.Optimism
5.Interpersonal skills
6.Persistence

Parents have to develop good relationship, gain confidence and develop all sorts skills required for the overall development of the child.
Here are some tips to develop EI in your child.
1.Avoid unnecessary scolding or misunderstanding children-Try to understand your children's mental situation and help them to express them well.Avoid jumping to some conclusions and scold your child.Misunderstanding your child can really hurt them badly.Try to gain confidence and built up self esteem of your child.

2.Parents need to spend quality time with children-Do find time for your child after your daily busy schedule.Talk to them, play with them and read good story books to them.

3.Try raising an independent child- Allow your kids to do things of their own and gain confidence.Avoid doing things for them always.Avoid saying things like "Do not do that,Do not do this" always. After your child has grown up to understand things avoid giving comments about what they do.Instead give suggestions. This is the positive way of developing the confidence in your child.

4.Try developing interpersonal skills in your child-Allow and encourage your child to sing or talk to people from a young age.Allow them to play with other children.
Allow them to express their creativity.Ask them about giving suggestion or ideas on doing and handling different things at home.Look out for talents of your child and try encouraging them to develop the skill.

5.Avoid all sorts of criticism-Avoid any sorts of words as "You cannot ,You are not good at studies,You are good for nothing " and so on.Avoid comparing your child with siblings like "Look how your brother is getting good grades."Also avoid comparing with friends or relatives in anyway.Encourage your child with words as "You can do it","You can handle it".Building self esteem through positive communication to your child really matters.
